Your Brother Project Runway machine is a great choice to start.
I started years ago with my Brother CS6000i and one of my first tries was the following image

That time, I was a teacher in a small island and I didnt have many materials and I used upcycled clothing (socks, and t-shirt). If you observe, I had some difficulties at the edges!
Keep on trying and experimenting!!
