At the university of arts we are doing several investigations referring to my specialty, which is Mixed Media, the topic that we are investigating this semester is "weightlessness" (absence of gravity) this week we had to present a sculptural proposal referring to that topic, looking for some artists referring to the subject on the internet, I found several people that allowed me to have a starting point to create my proposal, among those artists were Luis Mille, Anish Kapoor and Olafur Eliasson. The proposal that I had to present had to be made with a single material, in my case I chose aluminum and as I always work on recycling, this time was no exception, I used several aluminum cans to present my proposal. En la universidad de artes estamos haciendo varias investigaciones referentes a mi especialidad que son los Medios Mixtos, el tema que estamos investigando este semestre es la "Ingravidez" (ausencia de gravedad) esta semana ten铆amos que presentar una propuesta escult贸rica referente a ese tema, buscando algunos artistas referentes al tema en internet, me encontr茅 con varios personajes que me permitieron tener un punto de partida para crear mi propuesta, entre esos artistas estaban Luis Mille, Anish Kapoor y Olafur Eliasson. La propuesta que ten铆a que presentar deb铆a ser realizada con un solo material, en mi caso escog铆 el aluminio y como siempre vengo trabajando el reciclaje, en esta ocasi贸n no fue la excepci贸n, utilice varias latas de aluminio para plantear mi propuesta.
The main idea was to be inspired by nature and organic shapes, I made several designs and started cutting one of the aluminum cans to create the base of my small sculptural proposal; the objective in the base is to create a structure that has rounded tips to generate a feeling of instability, but that is firm enough to support the entire structure without movement, and thus be able to generate the effect of weightlessness that is sought for the activity. La idea principal era inspirarme en la naturaleza y las formas org谩nicas, realice varios dise帽os y comenc茅 a cortar una de las latas de aluminio para crear la base de mi peque帽a propuesta escult贸rica; el objetivo en la base es crear una estructura que tenga la punta de las patas redondeadas para generar una sensaci贸n de inestabilidad, pero que fuese lo suficientemente firme para que soporte la estructura completa si movimiento, y as铆 poder generar el efecto de ingravidez que se busca para la actividad.
Then with another can I wanted to create the upper part of the sculpture, this part is the one that will direct the appreciation of the concept, in this part I want to make reference to the organic, the natural, my main idea is to resemble a "Tree" that is part of the concept that I want to work on, since Trees are an excellent example of weightlessness, because they are a force that resists gravity by growing in the opposite direction to that gravitational force. To achieve this concept I used the bottom of an aluminum can, I cut and extended 8 folds to generate the effect of branches or leaves of a tree, this will be the upper part of the sculptural piece. Luego con otra lata quer铆a crear la parte superior de la escultura, esta parte es la que direccionara la apreciaci贸n del concepto, en esta parte quiero hacer referencia a lo org谩nico, a lo natural, mi principal idea es asemejar un "脕rbol" ese es parte del concepto que quiero trabajar, ya que Los 脕rboles son un excelente ejemplo de ingravidez, porque son una fuerza que se resiste a la gravedad creciendo en la direcci贸n contraria a esa fuerza gravitacional. Para lograr ese concepto utilic茅 la parte inferior de una lata de aluminio, recorte y extend铆 8 pliegues para generar un efecto de ramas o hojas de un 谩rbol, esta ser谩 la parte superior de la pieza escult贸rica.
When the two pieces are joined together, a sculptural proposal is created with a lot of visual weight, but generating (at least in my opinion) that effect of weightlessness thanks to the base with those tips of the two semicircular legs that create a delicate and stable tension; I imagined this proposal on a much larger scale, on an architectural level, as if I could create several churuatas for a restaurant on the beach, and inside between the two legs there were some tables where customers would enjoy their delicious meals. Cuando se unen las dos piezas se genera una propuesta escult贸rica con mucho peso visual, pero generando (por lo menos a mi parecer) ese efecto de ingravidez gracias a que la base con esas puntas de las dos patas semicirculares crean una tensi贸n delicada y estable; esta propuesta me la imagine a una escala mucho mayor, a nivel arquitect贸nico, como si pudiera crear varias churuatas para un restaurante en la playa, y dentro entre las dos patas hubieran unas mesitas en donde los clientes disfrutar铆an de sus deliciosas comidas.
In the proposal review class, my classmates also presented some wonderful and creative sculptural pieces. Several debates were held with very constructive criticism that will allow us to redesign and improve our proposals to make them more appropriate for the corresponding activity. In my case, they suggested that I could not present the proposal with those prints that the cans have, because they generate a very deep-rooted visual weight and distract the viewer's eye from the main concept of the proposal. This is a point that I have to take into account when working with recycled materials. Even though I really like how those details look, the viewer will not find them as aesthetically acceptable as I do. En la clase de revisi贸n de las propuestas mis compa帽eros, tambi茅n presentaron unas maravillosas y creativas piezas escult贸ricas, se armaron varios debates con criticas muy constructivas que nos permitir谩n redise帽ar y mejorar nuestras propuestas para hacerlas m谩s acertadas con la actividad correspondiente. En mi caso me sugirieron que no pod铆a presentar la propuesta con esos estampados que tienen impreso las latas, porque generan un peso visual muy arraigado y distrae la vista del espectador de concepto principal de la propuesta, es un punto que tengo que tomar en cuenta a la hora de trabajar con materiales reciclados, a pesar de que a m铆 me gusta mucho como se ven esos detalles, pero para la visi贸n del espectador no lo tomaran igual de est茅ticamente aceptable como lo hago yo.
These conceptual and practical exercises really allow us to develop a criterion more focused on the conceptual aesthetics required for art to have more essence and vitality. This proposal is just the starting point to create a sculpture that allows me to accurately represent my ideal and effectively transmit the message to the viewer. Little by little I will make aesthetic improvements and redesign the piece until I reach the desired proposal that we will present in January as a final project of the semester. De verdad que estos ejercicios conceptuales y pr谩cticos nos permiten ir desarrollando un criterio m谩s enfocado en la est茅tica conceptual que se requiere para que el arte tenga m谩s esencia y vitalidad, esta propuesta es solo el punto de partida para crear una escultura que me permita representar mi ideal de manera acertada y que se trasmita el mensaje con eficacia al espectador, poco a poco ir茅 realizando mejoras est茅ticas y redise帽ando la pieza hasta alcanzar la propuesta deseada que presentaremos en enero como proyecto final de semestre, como siempre estar茅 compartiendo todo el proceso con la comunidad.
