It was a rainy, windy, bitter night and I didn’t have any recollection what so ever of how I got on that street. It was probably midnight, I thought, since it was immensely dark, and nobody was around, no cafés nor any stores were open to take refuge in. I walked ahead, because I was a little frightened and it wasn’t logical to just stay put and do nothing, that’s when I saw this sketchy coffeehouse, which looked weird and dim, but, hearing people’s voices, I felt comfortable going in.

As I got in, I saw what seemed to be a sign of some sort, a yellowish board written on it with black capital letters: WELCOME TO DEORK. There were fewer people than I had expected when I heard the voices. I saw an empty booth and hastened to it in a way that sparked their attention to me. I ordered a black, hot coffee which was surprisingly delicious; halfway through a sip I spoted a figure approaching, a short, neat little man with a bolding head and wide eyes that gave me the impression he was piercing through me with that gaze, as if he saw my soul. I was scared out of my wits. ‘May I sit with you young man?’ he asked with a hoarse, echoing voice. ‘ Yes, sure’ I answered childishly, hesitatingly showing my fright.
‘You’re not a regular here, are you?’ he said, ‘Who are you? And where do you come from? May I ask?’
‘Sir with all due respect, I don’t know you, so I don’t feel comfortable answering these questions’
‘That’s alright boy, I don’t blame you. It’s just that someone like you coming in here is an anomaly, and I’m quite interested in anomalies,’ he looked around him as if he was about to spill some dark secret about the universe, then he whispered, ‘what do you know about death boy? And don’t tell me you can’t even answer this plain question.’
‘Plain question?’ I exclaimed terrified, ‘ Death is inevitable, it’s a difficult and unfortunate certainty, I guess.’
‘Ha ha! Indeed it is boy, indeed. But what I want to know is that if you had had any experience with it, seen someone die I mean.’
‘I can’t say that I did,’ I said and asked the waitress for the check, hinting that I was leaving.
‘well! Here is some knowledge boy,’ he said looking serious and frightening, ‘ I have seen the finale of thousands of lives, young, old, rich, poor, each one is so sure of their realness. Their sensory experience constituted a unique individual with purpose and meaning . So certain that they were more than a biological puppet, laboring under the illusion of having a self. I look in their eyes and you know what I see? They welcomed it not at first, but right there in the last instant, it’s an unmistakable relief, because they were afraid, and now they saw for the very first time how easy it was to just let go. They saw in that last nanosecond what they were, that it is all merely a big drama. In the last nanosecond you realize that all your life, all you love, all you hate, all your memories, all your pain, it was all the same dream, a dream that you had inside a locked room, a dream about being a person. So death is…’
‘I’m sorry sir, but I need to go!’ I interrupted and rushed out before he could talk again. I was running like a mad dog on that street looking behind me, as I got farther and farther from that place, I started slowing down, then every fiber of my being froze suddenly when I saw the man before me smiling, I thought he was going to kill me.
‘ The Last nanosecond!’ he said ecstatically and vanished like smoke.
I woke up panting for breath, thinking I was having a heart attack, when I realized that I was just having a bad dream inside my locked room.
