This reminds me of a person's shadow. I believe those who brave the forest and make it out the other end are a step ahead. Integration of our shadows involves understanding and forgiveness. When we know that our own potential for light and dark ranges the same as everyone elses, its then that we can love unconditionally and without judgement.
