Hello Steemians and Esteemians, greetings from my end. Its your girl @princessjulius and today I'd be writing on the topic "Is management a science or art".
Science is the systematic study of knowledge. Science is an embodiment of knowledge created by observations and verifications. Science is procedural, it has to do with cause and effect(Correlational study).
Characteristics of Science includes;
- Objectivity.
- Based on facts.
- Systematic.
- Body of knowledge.
- Hypothetical.
- Experimentation/Observation.
Management is systematic in the sense that for research work to be done, it must go through different steps. Management plays their studies in objectivity and facts.
Firstly, management identifies a problem. Secondly, they follow a systematic process. Thirdly, they follow object as a next step.
Thereafter, hypothesis(tentative guess) follows as the next step. And then methodology is put to use as a research design. Various variables comes under methodology such as identification, design e.t.c. thereafter then, discussion is put to practice and then recommendations. Therefore, Management is a science.
Note: If a science studies about people, social responsibilities etc, it is known as social science.
In a broader sense, if a discipline can be organized into a system of explicit primary and secondary theories whereby past and current changes in the system can be explained and future changes predicted, this body of knowledge could be called accurately a science. This broader interpretation of science would encompass management as well as other social science s like economics, psychology, and sociology. Interestingly, these social sciences have been called inexact sciences because they deal with human elements.
Management as an Art is a process of doing something which primarily depends on personal judgement, imagination, technical skills and experience. It does not depend upon generally accepted principles or rules. When one sees management as anart, one thinks of creative ability and special aptitude to design or effect a desire result. The application of this knowledge to individual situation is seen as art for acquisition was not subject to rigors of science.
CONCLUSIONS.
We therefore conclude that management is both an art and science. It is science in its methodology and art units application. It must be observed that the two are not mutually exclusive but complementary. A good manager must know the concepts and principles of management(science) and also how to apply them in unique situations.
Blending of science with experience leads to a successful management that achieves desired result.
