Well and well. First and foremost, you know how your buddy thinks and reacts to things. A little reminder (even though I don't know him) here will do I think. Have you ever convinced him on buying an item 'against' his will? If so, how did you do it? Can you recount how you walked him through the buying process? Do you remember how he 'saw' your choice as been superior to his? Or is it through showing the quality of your item over his that prompted the buy?
