Fluctuating rainfall can provoke insect attacks on crops thus reducing yields.

Fluctuation in rainfall can be characterized by intermittent rainfall patterns or dry spells ranging from one to several weeks. This will therefore lead to increase in temperatures in the concerned areas, thus influencing the high presence of stem borers in maize crop for example which come from moths.

These moths mostly fly at night and will lay its eggs in the funnel of maize. During which period the said eggs are hatched and develop into larvae called or known as stem borers. The larvae have strong teeth which they use to eat into the stems of maize and after sometime, the larvae transforms back to the moth and flies away.

These effects are very much visible in maize and small holes are found on young leaves and stems with tissues eaten away.
Some plants in the course of that are completely destroyed and the plants fall of, some witnessing stunted growth and poor food formation , as leaves of affected plants whither thus yields are grossly affected.

However, farmers should always be vigilant and take precautionary measures such as application of chemicals such as insecticides sprayed on the maize. Alternatively, farmers in rural communities can also use wood ash if they are unable to afford chemicals and apply on the funnels of maize each time there are incidents of dry spell of up to a few weeks to suffocate the eggs and stop them from hatching.

Regular rains help facilitate the washing away of such eggs on maize funnels by water thus limiting or reducing their rate of infestation thereby guaranteeing high yields.

Therefore, frequent farm visit will greatly contribute in identifying infested crops during this period of fluctuation rainfall and increase temperatures as a result of climate change. As this will greatly contribute in high yields, thus increase in the income of farmers.
