One Other Detail

Here’s a small update on the lack of any word from federal law enforcement or hospital officials on the what and how of the injury Donald Trump suffered last Saturday in western Pennsylvania when a 20-year-old gunman tried to shoot him. As I’ve noted, Pennsylvania State Police initially told reporters on the scene that Trump had been struck by shards of glass. Then Trump himself said he’d been hit with a bullet and that was the end of the matter. There’s small detail from a local news report from last Sunday that suggests it as at least plausible that the initial report was correct, that Trump was struck by some flying debris.

Trump Reminds Democrats He’s Beatable

The cursed few of us who watched Trump’s speech to the end saw a paper tiger, but it’s not as though Trump ran a textbook campaign until last night. He got convicted of 34 felonies just a few weeks ago! He’s backed terribly unpopular ideas, boasting repeatedly of his responsibility for overturning Roe v. Wade.
And yet he’s been leading—neck-and-neck at worst—the whole way through. Watching him flail through another bizarre speech doesn’t suggest Democrats’ misgivings about President Biden have been misplaced. Rather, it suggests that Trump’s weaknesses have gone unexploited, because Democrats have been poorly situated to exploit them.

Biden Stews at Pressure to Drop Out of the Race

Sick with Covid and abandoned by allies, President Biden has been fuming at his Delaware beach house, increasingly resentful about what he sees as an orchestrated campaign to drive him out of the race and bitter toward some of those he once considered close, including his onetime running mate Barack Obama.
Mr. Biden has been around politics long enough to assume that the leaks appearing in the media in recent days are being coordinated to raise the pressure on him to step aside… He considers Representative Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker, the main instigator, but is irritated at Mr. Obama as well, seeing him as a puppet master behind the scenes.
The friction between the sitting president and leaders of his own party so close to an election is unlike anything seen in Washington in generations — especially because the Democrats now working to ease him out were some of the allies most critical to his success over the last dozen years.
