Two months ago, a friend had told me about how she cried during her birthday after no one from her family called her to wish her a happy birthday. She said it had made her feel some kind of way, especially seeing how we, her friends, had all called or texted her on that.

I had sympathized with her and had gotten the great idea to also not tell anyone about my birthday, which was only just a month away, to see if anyone would remember. So I had said nothing until it eventually got to that day.

You see, I come from a family where we rarely ever celebrate anything. It has always been that way all thanks to my old man, who doesn't see the point in these celebrations, so I wasn't expecting any texts or calls from any of them. But for the past five years or so, I've had a handful of friends, and we've made it our purpose in life to always call or text each other on our birthdays to wish each other a happy birthday.

And seeing how that had become a tradition, I always looked forward to their call or text. Well, it eventually got to that day, and as usual, I didn't make any post or create any awareness about it.

I didn't want the whole world calling to wish me a happy birthday; as long as my friends called, I was happy with it. Unfortunately, those calls or texts never came, and that was when I understood how my friend felt on her birthday, so I waited until the next day and went into their DMs.

I first of all asked how they were doing to make sure they were fine, and when I confirmed it. I had reminded them about my birthday, which was the previous day, and of course what followed was a series of apologies, but I wasn't even upset.

I was just sad that even the one day I do get to be celebrated had suddenly turned into an ordinary day. It made me feel some kind of way, and I didn't like that.
