Unlike many, I don't view nationalism as some evil thing. I take it a step further actually, and think for large nations it is detrimental to local living. When the U.S. was formed, it was made up of smaller states, each somewhat like their own country. They joined a union to better serve aligned goals of the states. Now they find themselves under control of the union bureaucracy, which was what the civil war was really about. Someone hundreds or a thousand miles away usually will do what's best for them and their local area at the expense of those so far away. It is easier for them to escape wrath not being localized.

You will never convince with words those in power who seek to not only maintain their power, but grow it. They use force to ensure their demands are met. It is what they understand. Unfortunately, pacifism has led to many men misunderstanding the truth of nature, which is harsh and predatory.
