I commented years ago to my mom about the red sky, and she said it was from the dirt/soil. If true (not sure I buy it's the dirt) I'm guessing its because of the vast copper deposits around Tucson. Perhaps Sedona has a smaller amount of copper (I do believe it's mined there as well) so the blue of the sky is more dominant making the color purple? Not really sure though.
