Oh wow, I didn't know it happens in South Africa too. Here in Kenya students are graduating with education loans that most can't pay as finding a job is a challenge. So they end up being indebted for such a long time. They may get those hand to mouth jobs that leaves them with nothing extra. You are right, there are enough resources to go around for everyone and education should be free. But in Africa you find that the elite hold most of the wealth at the expense of general public. Something's gotta give in this dirty game but unfortunately these gullible young people will keep taking the loans enslaving themselves. It's a pity to see it happen but what can you do?
