Stephen R. Covey's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a self-help book. It is based on Covey's notion that our perceptions of the world are entirely based on our own. We must change ourselves in order to alter a circumstance, and we must be able to modify our views in order to change ourselves.

Everyone wants to be successful. Identifying the habits that can assist us on our journey is one road to success. Below is a summary of the seven habits.

Habit 1: Be Proactive

People who are reactive adopt a passive attitude, believing that the world is happening to them. They believe the problem is "out there," but it is their perception that is the issue. Reactive people feel increasingly victimized and out of control as their reactivity becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Proactive people, on the other hand, realize their duty — or "response-ability," as defined by Covey as the power to select how you will respond to particular stimuli or situation.

To be proactive, we must concentrate on the Circle of Influence that lies inside our Circle of Concern—that is, we must work on the issues that we can influence. Our Circle of Influence will grow as a result of our positive energy.

Reactive people, instead, concentrate on issues that are in their Circle of Concern but not in their Circle of Influence, which leads to external blame, negative energy, and a shrinking of their Circle of Influence.

Habit 2: Begin With The End In Mind

Every single day of your life should add to the overall vision you have for your life. Knowing what is most important to you allows you to live your life in service of it. The second habit entails finding old scripts that are diverting you from your core values and replacing them with new ones that are more in line with your core beliefs. This means that when obstacles emerge, you will be able to tackle them head-on and with integrity since your beliefs are well-defined.

Creating a personal mission statement, according to Covey, is the most effective approach to start with the end in mind. It should concentrate on the following points:

Who you aspire to be (character)
What you wish to accomplish (contributions and achievements)
The values that both of these items are built on

Your goal statement will evolve into your personal constitution over time. It becomes the foundation upon which you make all of your life decisions. By putting principles at the heart of your life, you may build a strong foundation on which to build your future. Principles do not sway because they are not influenced by external influences. They provide you with something to cling to when things get difficult. You can adopt a clearer, more objective vision by living a principle-led life.

Habit 3: Put First Things First

Covey poses two questions:

What one thing could you do on a regular basis to improve your personal life that you aren't already doing?

Similarly, what is one thing you could do to boost your business or career?

Whereas habit one urges you to recognize that you are in control of your own life and habit two is based on your ability to picture and identify your important values, habit three is the application of these two habits. It emphasizes the use of independent will to develop good self-management. You become aware that you have the capacity to substantially affect your life in the present by asking yourself the above questions.

As a result, having an autonomous will implies that you are capable of making and acting on judgments. Your integrity determines how often you employ your autonomous will. How much you value yourself and how well you maintain your promises are both indicators of your integrity. The third habit is all about prioritizing your obligations and putting the most important things first. This entails honing your ability to say no to items that don't align with your values.

In managing our activities, besides the Quadrant 1 activities, we should focus on Quadrant 2 which are activities that are not urgent but important. Quadrant II is the foundation of good personal management. It covers topics such as developing connections, long-term planning, exercising, and preparation — all things we know we should do but rarely do since they don't feel essential.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

We must commit to generating Win-Win circumstances that are mutually advantageous and satisfying to each side in order to develop productive interdependent relationships. Maintaining an Abundance Mentality, or the attitude that there is enough for everyone is another crucial aspect in finding Win-Win solutions. Keep the focus on results, not tactics; on problems, not individuals, to accomplish Win-Win.

Finally, in a competitive setting, the Win-Win mentality will perish. We need to match our reward system with our aims and values as a company and have the processes in place to enable a Win-Win.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

We must endeavor to truly comprehend another person and their perspective before we can offer advice, suggest solutions, or effectively communicate with them in any way. However, we tend to prescribe a solution, before we diagnose a problem We don't try to figure out what the problem is all about first.

We must attempt first to comprehend, then to be understood, according to Habit 5. We must learn to listen in order to seek understanding.

We need to listen empathically which necessitates a mindset shift. Typically, we attempt to be understood first. The majority of individuals listen with the intention of responding rather than understanding. They're either speaking or prepared to speak at any given time.

We considerably boost the credibility of our ideas when we can convey them clearly and in the context of a profound grasp of the other person's needs and concerns.

Habit 6: Synergize

When synergy is at its best, it combines the desire to negotiate win-win agreements with empathic communication to achieve maximum results. It's what principle-centered leadership is all about. Because it is built on the tenet that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, it brings people together and releases tremendous power. The true test is to incorporate synergetic creative cooperation principles into your social relationships. Such occasions of synergetic interpersonal group collaboration, according to Covey, are often overlooked but should be a part of your daily life.

Synergy is a process where vulnerability, openness, and communication are required. It entails balancing the mental, emotional, and psychological differences among a group of people and, as a result, forming new thinking paradigms among the group's members. This is where the most creativity may be found. Effectiveness as an interrelated reality is synergy. This entails collaboration, team building, and the formation of bonds with other people.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

This seventh habit focuses on self-improvement through the four dimensions of renewal:

Physical: Exercise, nutrition, and stress management are all examples of physical activities. This entails taking care of your physical body by eating well, sleeping adequately, and exercising on a regular basis.

Social: Service, empathy, harmony, and inner security are all social/emotional traits. This gives you a sense of safety and significance.

Spiritual: Clarify and commit to your values, research, and meditation. You become closer to your center and your inner value system by focusing on this aspect of your life.

Mental: Reading, imagining, planning, and writing are all mental activities. Continuously educating oneself entails increasing one's mental horizons.

Sharpening the saw entails expressing and exercising all four motivations on a regular and consistent basis. Because you are the instrument of your performance, this is the most significant investment you can make in your life. Overindulging in one area implies neglecting another, therefore it's critical to balance each area.

Sharpening your saw in one dimension, on the other hand, has a beneficial knock-on impact in another due to their interconnectedness. For example, when you improve your physical health, you may also improve your mental health. As a result, you'll experience an upward spiral of growth and transformation, which will help you become more self-aware. As you continue up the spiral, you will be required to learn, commit, and perform more in order to become a more efficient individual.
