Greetings, friends of Zona de escalofrio. This story I’m sharing with you is about a cat—small in size, with an enigmatic gaze and a loving, protective heart. Cats are special creatures who, by sharing their lives with us humans, allow us to understand them to a certain extent and to love them unconditionally.
There was something strange about that room—an energy or presence that we couldn't see, but that our dog Sofie and my cat Mimí sensed in a different way.
On several occasions, my daughters, who slept in that room, were startled to see strange movements in some objects. For example, the sheets would lift up without anyone touching them, or they would hear voices very close to their ears.
My mother-in-law, who visited us often, would tell me that there was a presence right there in front of the door. I accept that some people are more perceptive than others and that I’m not one of them. I wasn’t able to see or sense anything out of the ordinary.
Sofie would bark repeatedly at something that scared her and that was in front of the door. One night, her fear was so intense that she woke me up by pawing at my bedroom door and rushing in as soon as I opened it. When I took her back to my daughters’ room, I saw her scuttling backward down the hallway with her belly pressed against the floor. That really struck me. She was truly terrified.
When Mimí came to our home, she was a baby kitten that had been abandoned on an island in the middle of an avenue. When my daughter came home from high school, she saw her, rescued her, and brought her home. Although I had lived with many cats that came and went from my house when I lived with my parents, after I got married and had children, there were no cats in our home because we lived on high floors, and I believed that a cat should have the freedom to come and go as it pleased. But that little ball of brown and black fur and those big green eyes made me change my mind, and she stayed with us.
He wouldn’t stop meowing with a high-pitched squeal, so I named him Mimí, even though my daughters said that was a girl’s name.
When Mimí was a kitten, he didn’t seem to notice or show any interest in strange occurrences, but once he became an adult, he would stop at the entrance to the hallway and stare intently at the bedroom door until I called him. Sometimes he’d turn to look at me and then go back to staring at whatever I couldn’t see but he could. And unlike Sofi, Mimí wasn’t afraid.
When I or one of my children stayed up late working on the computer, he would stay right there—either sprawled out on the table or curled up on our laps—and I would tell him he was our guardian, our protective little cat, because that’s how I felt.
Mimí lived with us for seven years, and when she died, my children and I were very sad. While we lived in that apartment, there were times when I could see the reflection of her body in the places where she used to be, or sometimes feel the fleeting brush of her soft body against my legs when I sat down at the computer to work.
