As an electrolyte, potassium is the ion that has positive charge which must be retained in a certain concentration (around 30 times higher in than in the outer cells) in order to carry out its functions. This includes the interaction of substances against sodium, to help control nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and heart function.
