The science bods at Ford have been looking into driver fatigue, and how it can be overcome.

In their quest to do so, they have teamed up with Neuroscientists over at thei research centre in Dunton, their aim is to identify key brain responses that can be used to identify driver fatigue.

As we are now out of lockdown, many of us are travelling long distance again, and there are only a few of us that stop and take a break every two hours (as recommended)

There are still way too many serious and fatal road accidents in the U.K., and driver fatigue is a contributing factor in nearly a quarter of these.

In an an effort to combat this, the team have been mapping brain patterns with an MRI machine, and looking at the data with a team from Uniklinik RWTH Aachen in Germany.

Drivers are asked to undertake a driving simulation where their brain activity is mapped in order to measure reactivity. Based on gaming technology, the simulation measures the driver before, during and after, in order to garner a response pattern.

As more data is collated, Ford hope to create advanced driver features that can easiy detect when the driver is becoming fatigued and needs to stop for a break.
