Anecdotal works of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, written on the background of monastic movement and Bengal famine, appeared in 1882 AD. The revolutionary ideology of this novel has worked to awaken social and political consciousness. Vande Mataram, a song from the same novel, later got the status of the national anthem.
The time period described in Anandathth is quite similar to Hunter's historical work Annals of Rural Bengal, Gleng's Memoir of the Life of Warren Hastings and the facts contained in historical documents of that time.
