She said nothing and the two men continued speaking. Only thing on her mind was the best part of her life, laying limp in her arms. The tears welled up relentlessly. The guys were talking about sports and paid her no attention.
Maddie knew nothing of sports, just how to train rescue animals. Her daddy taught her how at a young age and she became a professional dog trainer for the blind. Her mama had lost her sight after her auto accident, so her daddy brought home a puppy who was just freshly starting training. The lump in Maddies throat grew as the vet called her to come to the back room.
Ten beds skirted the edge of the room, and in the center was a nurses desk. The scene was more than she could handle and her legs buckled under her, causing her to land on her knees, all the while holding her beloved dog Brody. A couple of guys came over to her and helped her up, one of them trying to pick up her dog. She shook her head no as the tears poured down her face. The guys helped her up gently and helped support her while walking with her to an empty bed.
As Maddie looked around and same time cradled her Brody, she saw the sadness in the eyes of everyone in the room. Each bed had a dog and owner sitting or laying on them. The nurse/vet came over to Maddie and slowly went over the paperwork.
Maddie kept looking around the room as the vet spoke to her. She saw out of the corner of her eye a big patch of red. Her face went pale and when the vet noticed, she asked Maddie if she needed a moment and if she would like some water. Maddie asked why there was blood on the floor. When the vet asked what she was looking at Maddie pointed. The vet replied, "oh that isn't blood, that's ketchup on the floor. As a goodbye treat to one of the dogs, we gave him a hamburger with ketchup since it was the dog's favorite treat."
