Your post has reminded me of a speech Jesse Ventura gave at Google over 10 years ago. He actually proposed the same exact solution :) Additionally, he suggested we start with offering a final choice on the bottom of a ballot: none of the above :) This way whichever candidate wins, their likely to lose to none of the above :)
