Famagusta, formerly the most important international port on the island, is currently not recognized by any country except Turkey and its harbour is therefore almost abandoned. Tourists had avoided the occupied regions for decades and returned to the northern part just recently. Limassol has somehow managed to attract both large cargo ships and tourists, however weird it may sound. It is currently the most important cargo port, yacht harbour and arguably even seaside destination on Cyprus. Besides, In addition, it is strategically located for those who dare to explore the Troodos Mountains. We prefer mountains to tourist hotspots, so we stopped in Limassol just to refresh ourselves and catch a bus to Troodos village in the heart of the mountains."
