The Presence of Mine Enemies by Ed Ayers, chronicles the lead up to the war from the perspective of Augusta County, VA and Franklin County, PA
Mapping for Stonewall by William Miller, is about Jed Hotchkiss and the confederate campaigns in the valley based out of Churchville.
Lee's Lieutenants by Douglas Southall Freeman is a really excellent command study, virtually all taking place within 3 hours of Staunton.
The Longest Night, A Military History of the Civil War by David Eicher is a good overview of the entire conflict, not just in the South.
Conquering The Valley by Robert K. Krick, is probably my favorite. It is a minute by minute (almost) account of Jackson at Port Republic. A treasure for an armchair historian because it comes with very detailed maps for Cross Keys and Port Republic.
