Although Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon may not be as popular as other tourist destinations in my country, there is more to discover in my hometown as it is home to several hidden gems worth learning.
I have been living in the town for more than three decades, but I failed to touch down at a most significant place since I have traveled less on this site.
Perhaps I was very excited as I approached the famous landmark.
Indeed MacArthur Heritage Landmark is a beautiful place for historical facts and those interested in World War II.
The MacArthur Heritage Landmark is a historical site that is a tribute to General Douglas MacArthur, one of the most famous American generals in history.
When I arrived at the place, I was fortunate to meet historians and tour guides, and they were talking about their great-great grandfathers who were part of the Allied Forces of the Philippines. I was amazed by the history buffs they had been retelling.
It made me recall my learnings when I was still in elementary that General Douglas MacArthur was the commander of the Allied Forces in the Philippines. He ordered the retreat of his troops to Australia after the Japanese had landed in the country. However, he vowed to return and liberate the Philippines from the Japanese. And I cannot ever forget his most famous line, that is, “I shall return.”
Moreover, according to the rotary club of Northern Bukidnon, it was engraved on the monuments that the heritage landmark is also devoted to the brave soldiers who fought in the battle between the Allied Forces and the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.
The monuments in the heritage landmark emphasized that the site is the US airforce Del Monte Airfield and that the Allied Forces comprised Filipino and American soldiers defending the Bay area in Cagayan de Oro City. The site also has a small museum that showcases photographs, documents, and other memorabilia related to the Battle of Macajalar Bay and General MacArthur's life.
I was fascinated to visit a significant place where I saw the MacArthur Heritage Landmark featuring a life-size statue of General Douglas MacArthur, as well as a plaque that bears the general's famous quote, "I shall return."
Suddenly, I reflected on how my visit impacted me, as I gained new insights and perspectives, and how it affected my appreciation for history and the sacrifices made by those who fought in World War II.
Aside from its historical significance, the MacArthur Heritage Landmark is also an excellent spot for taking photos and enjoying the scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
I was enjoying the picturesque view of the site, which is located on a hill and offers a panoramic view of the town of Manolo Fortich and the lush greenery that surrounds it.
And that the MacArthur Heritage Landmark is not only a historical place that provides fascinating insights and information but an excellent spot for taking photos and enjoying the natural beauty of Bukidnon.
