The Time was 1983; Apple's Assistant Founder and Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs said about the future of software technology six months before the start of the first Macintosh, " It would be a little like a record store, where software would be downloaded over phone lines". This prediction has proven of this expert technician. Currently we can easily download any app from the online store, which is known worldwide as the 'App Store'.

At present our lives are mostly dependent on application technology. Starting from the wake alarms in the morning, starting with the playlist of favourite music players, going to jogging, buying a car ticket, booking a hotel room or restaurant table, choosing the right and easy way through digital navigation technology to reach the destination, With the help of regular communication, continuing relationships will make life easier in many ways by this technology. If you want, you can easily monitor every movement of your dear one for the sake of safety through your smartphone by adhering to some conditions. You can keep your eyes on the far side of your home, car, and other things. In fact, the application is made with every kind of management needed to make life easy and pleasant.

Day by day this technology is progressing further. Developing almost all kinds of technologies, developers are creating apps that can not be imagined a year ago. But this development was not possible in a few years. It has to go through a long period of evolution. Today, I will tell you about the history and evolution of the mobile phone app.

Starting

Everything started on April 3, 1973 by Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, the first mobile phone of the Motorola company, built in Bell Lab by the hands of Martin Cooper. Although the phone weighing about two pounds came in the market in 1983. That is, it takes ten years to reach mobile technology in general. But then everything went on very fast.

First Smartphone

If we look back in the early days of the mobile app there was nothing much like Java games, calculators, and monthly calendars in the mobile app category instead of the current fancy, improved graphics, a user interface designed for many research purposes. But within 20 years of making mobile phones, IBM Simon comes to introduce the whole world to the smartphone. It came out on August 16, 1994. It has sold almost fifty thousand units in just one year, despite the high prices. Data light ROM-DOS operating system phones could be sent fax, email, cellular page, in addition to ordinary phone calls. Apart from touchscreen technology, this phone had several applications, including address book, calendar, appointment scheduler, calculator, world time clock, electronic notepad, etc. Which are a very basic standard feature for the current time but at that time, these was under the improved application development.

Then two more years. Revolution has also been stepped in step by step. Sometimes, very slow, sometimes very quickly. Starting from Psion EPOC, iOS is currently the subject of an entry into the huge empire of Android.

Psion EPOC: Origin of Symbian OS

The adoption of technology that can be adopted as an app is by Psion's hand. At the beginning of '90 it was known as a Personal Digital Partner (PDA) device. It was released as a six-bit machine in the market, where there were many useful apps like word processor, database, spreadsheet, diary, under EPOC operating system installed. Later on, the device's improved version increases the battery capacity and adds two MB RAM, allowing users to install different apps from different software packs.

The EPOC operating system was originally programmed with Open Programming Language (OPL), which allows users to create an app for themselves. In 1998, the Psion EPOC operating system was going under Symbian.

In 1996, Psion EPOC’s competitor came in field named Palm Pilot which is rich in Palm Operating System and also with a cheap range and more modern functionality. PDA which is rich with the touchscreen graphical user interface (GUI) could also run third party apps programmed with C / C ++ language besides the general feature app. Later, the WAP browser app was added to the operating system's version 3.0.

Java Micro Edition (Java ME / J2ME / JME)

Java Micro Edition is easy, but With the help of advanced services, the whole development platform takes its own while triumph of various features / app-rich phones in everywhere. It is transformed from Personal Java to JSR 68 and starts to be used in application-based devices like mobile phones, PDAs, set top boxes.
According to Oracle, the main goal of releasing this edition of Java was to create suitable applications for small devices made in limited space; Which were rich in small screens, limited amounts of memory and light battery power.

Currently the Standard Edition of Java used to create Internet application, Micro controllers, and Android applications, is known as Java Micro Edition.

Symbian and others

Previously it was mentioned that Symbian was originally transformed into Psion EPOC. In 1998, it came to market with Symbian Limited. It was originally a joint initiative of the top four mobile phone companies Psion, Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia. As of 2009, around 250 million devices worldwide were under this operating system. The operating system is used on phones of large phone companies such as Samsung, Motorola, LG, but most are used in Nokia. Companies like Japan's influential brands Mitsubishi, Sharp and Fujitsu were also regular customers of this operating system.

The popular software platform of Symbian OS was S60. The version created in 2001 in this series was first used in the Nokia 7650 model smartphone in 2002. In 2008, the fifth and final version released Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

There were a total of three software platforms, including S60, based on Symbian operating systems in the early market. Originally S60 was used in Nokia, Samsung and LG phones On the other hand, Japanese company Fujitsu and Sharp's MOAP and Motorola and Sony Ericsson's software platform were UIQ. Later in June 2008, Nokia bought all the shares of Symbian and brought it under the 'Symbian Foundation' as an open-source platform.

In 2006, 67% of the world's smartphones were occupied by Symbian operating systems. But due to the variety of limitations, it gradually lost popularity to the developers. First of all, there was no capability to use any programming language other than OPL and C ++ at the beginning of the application. Moreover, its software development kit (SDK) and the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) were not open to all, which discouraged the third-party independent developers. On the other hand, Android and iPhone operating systems have been on top of the head. The central infrastructure of these two operating systems was very easy for third-party app development.

Simplified designs, the availability of certain developer tools, solvability of various programming language complexity, the need for multitasking and high-graphic-rich applications for future consumers, and simultaneous development of Symbian services to Android and iOS operating systems. Symbian has lost its popularity since 2010, and immediately after the application technology goes completely under the ISO and Android operating system.

The last word

Currently, the availability of the technology of the application of smartphones as well as the affordability. Social networking, travel, healthcare, banking, news, etc. Today there are so many apps' demand that more than twenty thousand new apps are added to Apple App Store every month. According to the 2015 report, about 45 billion times downloaded apps from Apple and Android App Store. Considering all this, the entire world is based on application technology. With this time there will be more changes in this technology. Popular technologies such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality will be linked to demand. And this way the technology that started three decades ago will be evolving. After a few decades, it will be rewritten in the wonderful history of the application technology!
