René Negrín Méndez is a sculpture professor at the University of the Arts; I had the honor of studying under him, and he also served as my thesis advisor. It was an impromptu visit, yet Negrín welcomed me with his customary warmth. His studio is located near the University of the Arts, and I often visit to enjoy his friendship. Sometimes we philosophize and try to set the world right with our dreams; at other times, our beloved sculpture consumes our time; and on other occasions, I become that apprentice from long ago once more, soaking up his wisdom and sincerity.
The garden at his studio creates a magical atmosphere. Amidst the lush greenery and a variety of sculptures placed throughout the grounds, the setting is truly delightful. These are his own works from various periods—resembling an open-air museum—that signal we have arrived at the sanctuary of a man who has dedicated his entire life to creating three-dimensional art.
We sat at this table to talk and enjoy some delicious lemonade made from lemons harvested in the yard. The morning was cool, and Negrín seemed to soak up the tranquility of the moment. Parkinson’s disease is already limiting his life and his creative work; he was always a very active artist, and having to relearn things and move at a slower pace gives him a different perspective on life. Even so, he continues to teach something he has always been passionate about.
Before long, a student eager to learn drawing arrived. Negrin is an excellent draftsman and a very good teacher in this field. I myself would like to find the time to take a few classes with him. Observing the model, studying poses and musculature, and mastering chiaroscuro shading techniques are all details to consider. Drawing is a fundamental subject in visual arts studies; it is said that we sculptors have a distinctive way of drawing.

Nos sentamos en esta mesa a conversar y degustar una rica limonada hecha con los limones de la cosecha del patio. La mañana estaba fresca y Negrín parecía absorber la tranquilidad del momento. Ya el parkinson limita su vida y su creación. Siempre fue un artista muy activo y reaprender, y actuar más lentamente le provoca otra visión de la vida. Aún así se mantiene enseñando, algo que siempre le apasionó.
Al poco rato llegó un alumno ávido de aprender dibujo. Negrin es un excelente dibujante y muy buen profesor de esta especialidad.
