Dear Hivers!
In previous posts, I've told you about Finquita del Arte (Little Art Farm). It's a space where the arts and agroecology come together. And it's also been discovered that in April and May, it becomes home to many migratory birds. That's why this year they decided to create the bird festival with community participation.
Last May 9th, La Finquita welcomed children and adults from the community. When I arrived, I went out looking for the person who was already birdwatching. I ran into a mother who had also arrived with her daughter and Mendiola, my fellow painter who leads the La Finquita del Arte collective.
Nearby was the group of observers; Laura and Alieny, from the biology faculty of the University of Havana, had already led the children to the areas surrounding the doctor's lagoon.
It was a morning of discovering the birds that inhabit the area and others that visit seasonally. The teachers showed us how to distinguish them by their colors and songs. The tropical sun was very strong and bright, which is why the photos I took with my cell phone show excessive light.
Afterwards, we returned to the classroom at the Finquita del Arte. There, a large mural is on display, made with the children's drawings of birds.
The children created beautiful works of art. Very creative and colorful paintings, made with the imagination and fantasy typical of childhood.
A few days earlier, Mendiola and I decided to make birds out of recycled materials, and I created this owl with things I found scattered around the farm. Now it's part of the classroom decor.
The parents were waiting in the classroom. The teachers invited the children to do other fun exercises to help them learn more about birds.
They made drawings of the birds...
And they looked for their names on a piece of paper that contained a word search puzzle where they had to find them.
Childrens learned about the characteristics of each bird with cards provided by the teachers.
Next to the classroom is this little house, available for the birds to use as a home and to shelter their young.
It was a day of fun activities, and I think we all learned a lot about birds. They are wonderful, beautiful creatures. Every day I am more amazed to learn about these friends of nature. And I'm sure the children also had an incredible experience that will help them love nature even more.
