Hi Hivers and friends!
The newbies initiative has been going perfectly well. I’m always grateful after doing a particular task because it’s not easy for me here.
I don’t want to skip any of these tasks because it’s worth my time, I should be able to do what is expected of me to show that I understand what I have been taught and that I’m grateful for it.
I know how teachers feel when students fail to do an assignment, I don’t want mine to feel that way, so I do each task with my full chest.
The meeting we had with @starstrings01 and
@depressedfuckup was very important to our journey here on Hive.
I think without knowing these things one may just be a shadow blogger or a plant without its roots.
The essence of that meeting was all about hive keys. Depressed took his time to explain the five hive keys to us, their usage, and how you can save and keep them.
My partner for this task is @lizizoo, we discussed how we understood these keys, and the most appropriate way to save and keep them and gave each other advice.
My advice to her was to take the necessary steps to keep her keys safe now, not later.
Because one may want to do it later (maybe when he/she starts having valuable assets on hive) but forget, and only remember she didn’t secure her keys when her account is hacked. And it will be too late to do it by then.
Through the questions given to us, I am going to share what I learned in the class.
1. If your partner for the week from Newbies-hive mistakenly dropped their active key in a Discord channel, highlight the various steps you'll indulge in to keep such account assets safe from potential theft.
If my partner mistakenly dropped her active key on the discord channel, I will reach out to her to delete the keys immediately. Deleting it doesn’t mean she is safe anyway, so she will probably have her keys changed after transferring her liquid assets to a trusted account.
These are the steps to generating new hive keys:
1.Click on the the three dots beside settings.
2.Then click on keys & permissions
3.Click on change password. Here you will be asked to provide your owner key. This is to be sure you are the one who wants to change your keys and not some other person.
The reason why your owner key is very important is that anyone with your owner key can change your keys and log you out of hive.
I’ve also learned that in Hive, no one can recover your account for you once it’s stolen, so you’ll have to start afresh with a new account.
4.After putting in your password you click on generate new keys. Then you download it into your phone.
The next thing is to click on the update.
Without updating it, your old keys will still be in function.
What is the best way of saving your keys?
We were given many options for this.
You can save them in Google Drive; to keep it safe from hackers you change two or three characters. And make sure you can remember what you changed.
Another option is to copy it or print it out. And add them to your important files. This may be stressful, but it's one of the best things to do.
Hive Keychain also saves keys. So one can come here if one forgets her keys.
What advice would you give to your friend, in regard to safekeeping his/her keys?
My advice to her in regards to safekeeping her keys would be to have a hard copy of her keys and also save it in Google Drive. Changing a few characters in the second option is necessary.
Also, I will advise her not to click on links and airdrops she is not sure of, especially in her comments section and discord channel.
Assuming your partner does not understand the use of each of these keys, how do you explain this to him/her in the simplest way?
If my partner doesn't understand the use of these keys, I will explain to her thus;
Posting Key: this is the key we use most on Hive. It's the key that is needed to log in to Peakd, and other front-ends.
It's used for posting, commenting, and voting.
Active key: this is the key we use to make monetary exchange. Like withdrawal of HBD, tokens hive exchange/ conversions, etc.
It's also used for powering up and powering down.
This key is important because anyone who has access to it can take money and other liquid assets from your wallet.
Memo key: the only function of this key is to send and read encrypted messages. By encrypted messages we mean the messages that only the receiver can read(private messages). Anybody without your memo key won't be able to open this message, and you can't open it too if you don't have a memo key.
To send an encrypted message, you add a hashtag at the beginning of the message(your memo key is needed to send it).
Master key: this is the key that is used to generate new keys if you lose your account. It can also be used to recover your keys, if you misplaced them.
Owner key: this is the key that is used to change your keys if the need arises.
You may lose your account if this key is exposed to hackers.
It’s also the key that will enable you to have access to your recovery account if you want to change him/her. Or if you lose your account.
A recovery account is the account you can use to get back to your account if you lost it to hackers. Your recovery account must be a trusted person.
