Hi Folks!
2 days ago I went for Aurora hunting because the conditions were perfect - clear sky, mild temperature, very good Aurora Borealis forecasts.
I left my home after 8pm - I knew it is late already, from my experience, around 9 should be the culmination point of the whole show - not much time to find a good spot and setup everything.
I scouted the sky on the nearest beach just to see if something already started - all I spotted was a green glow in a far northern horizon. The beach in Ranheim is a great place to shoot but almost every frame is destroyed by huge light pollution from greenhouses on a small island on the north.
I decided I have to escape those lights because I really hate watching this orange glow on every shot.
I chose the far end of the coastline West from my position, I knew a nice spot with an open beach and a small harbor, but I needed around 25 minutes to get there.
By the time I passed Trondheim and reached more dark area, the whole show started!
I was looking at amazing lights above the fiord and my car while driving to the final destination. I was soo stressed to see this happening and having no any good place to stop the car and shoot.
I decided I will try to reach the final spot as fast as possible,
Around 20 minutes I was driving with magical Aurora above me, looking from my car windows on dynamic lights, which were blinking, spinning, twisting and dancing...
When I finally stop my car by the small sea harbor - the lights begun to disappear.
I managed to catch the last 5 minutes of the whole show. That time I didn't know it will be the only strong show that night.
Still hoping to see the next hit I was standing there 2,5 hours... nothing more spectacular happen. Just the green circle on the northern horizon. I was disappointed.
25 minutes of amazing Northern Lights show and 20 of them seen from a car... what a failure.
But I still managed to shoot the last lights - all the shots in gallery below.
That is how it is with Aurora Borealis hunting... sometimes the lights are dancing for hours, sometimes only few minutes.
The key to success is to be outside, on the spot, with the gear ready to shoot.
Next time I will be more prepared for sure!
The forecast say it will be nice show 3 nights in a row this week.
Now hoping only for a good weather.
