Garden Journal Challenge June! It's been a month already?? Man, time has been getting away from me this spring. I am so not on top of the garden this year. We joke in the Pagan community about "Pagan Time," that is that as a people, we have a propensity for running late (and other Pagans are really hung up on time and hate that about the rest of us), but this is pretty impressively behind, even for me. 馃檭

I mean, in my defense, the community garden isn't ready, either, lol. They were planning on it being ready for us earlier as well, so I'm not the only one behind. But normally by now I've got the balcony all cleaned up and things potted for the season. I still desperately need to go buy some more potting soil!

The cedar on these boxes smells wonderful, by the way: community garden in progress

So as I mentioned in my recent Caturday Life Blog, absolutely NONE of the very old pumpkin or cantaloupe seeds germinated. I tried! I do have four turnip plants going, though, which, since I desperately need potting soil, I borrowed some soil from two houseplants so I could do this:

Yes, that is them in the same little candleholder I was using to germinate them in paper towels, filled with soil so at least they can be in dirt now. The paper towels were moldy and gross as I picked them out of it since I had let it go so long, expecting to be able to directly put them in the garden box outside, lol. I hope they grow nice and strong while they wait patiently for the garden box. It's just as well, they would probably fry if I put them outside this week with as hot as it's been, being this small still.

I feel like all my garden plants always grow slowly. I can't tell you how many times I've started seeds in March and was only getting flowers on my tomatoes or cucumbers or peppers by like, August or September. I should have started these way earlier than May, but as I said, I've been super not on the ball this year.

Then I took over the yogurt tub I was using for the pumpkin seeds and started tomatoes, lavender, and poppy seeds:

And I made a little map for myself so I could remember which towel had which seeds in it if I was moving them before they were identifiable by appearance, lol.

PS, thanks for the code on how to do this, riverflows@riverflows! I had no idea. 馃槄 #LearnSomethingNewEveryDay

Then, I did the same with the cantaloupe seeds jar - pulled those towels out (which had an interesting round fungus growing on it... 馃槷), and started some herb seeds to grow in pots on the balcony: catnip, coriander, and parsley.

In addition to this outside garden prep, I finally started a new flat of cat grass for Yuan inside as well (which I've been needing to do forever!). I'll do the outside flat when I clean up the balcony, but I think I will need more soil there, too.

The only reason I had the soil for this is because I absconded with the soil from a houseplant that died. It was hard as a rock and I literally had to break it up with a hammer. Sooooooooo yeah, did I mention I need more potting soil? It's a good thing grass isn't too picky. I have learned that that kind of hardness happens when you have too much compost (did you even know that was possible??) in the soil. It's the compost that clumps up like that. So when I made this flat, I put the harder bits on the bottom and the softer soil on top. I am unsure if the houseplant died due to the lowered light in winter (it was in a lower light spot due to the angle of the sun coming in the windows), or the too-much-compost, or both. But it should work for grass, even if it's compost-heavy.

So that's where I'm at this June with the garden! Maybe I'll have some foods and flowers before the snow comes? I hope? 馃槀 I garden dangerously, it seems.

Happy growing! :)
