When you're at your favourite fishing hole, some things you catch are not worth taking home for the fish fry. They are the little guys---the punny fish that you release back into the lake because they're not worth the time and effort it would take to clean them. They are the lucky ones you let off the hook.
Before you go to heaven, do the same for any people against whom you are holding a grudge. Their offenses may be the size of a salmon,a marlin,or even a killer whale. But the truth is that the hook is under your skin not theirs. Allowing a grudge to eat away at you can leave your whole life smelling like last week's trout. It can affect your attitude, your energy, your emotions, and your example to others. It can even affect your relationship with God. The Bible says that you are to forgive others in the same that God's forgiven you. Consider all you've done that's worthy of God's turning His back on you. But God's done exactly the opposite. He sent His son to bear the punishment for your offenses. He's embraced you with open arms and invited you to spend eternity with Him. Learn from His love. You can't extend forgiveness with one hand while carrying a grudge in the other.
The truth is, when it comes to releasing bitterness against someone in your life, you've got bigger fish to fry. Don't waste another minute's energy and emotion on someone who will have to answer to God for what's been done. Learn what you can from the past. Forgive as many times as the offense rises to the surface of your mind. Let go of the grudge. Then move on to clearer calmer waters. God has so many adventures ahead of you that you don't want to be distracted by anything that takes your eyes off Him.
