Hello! I'm Steve The Philosophist.
About Me
I like to think of myself as a jack of all nerdery and a master of some. I am a perpetual undergrad student who has been struggling against poverty, emotional dysfunctions, and an utter lack of guidance for most of my life. Right now, life for me is better than it has ever been before. My only complaint is the uncertainty of not yet finding a substantial career or set of skills that I can guarantee myself a living wage with. IOW, I'm still thriving by charity and welfare in varying degrees, and I don't like it. I'm also not getting any younger in my mid 30s.
It's no time to despair, as so much of my luck has changed for the better just to get me where I am.
- I found therapy (CBT) that worked to make me more emotionally functional.
- I have more than enough self-taught skills to equate to a bachelor's degree even if the lowest paying but livable jobs out there won't look at my resume without one.
- I have a fiancee who is doing better than I am career wise who would keep me around if all I could do is clean the cat litter box. So, I guess I will always have work. Yay???
- I am networking every week with interesting people through a local tech meetup that I help to host. Free pizza + good company + professional advice = increasing the odds of my success.
- I'm in school!... And it doesn't suck half as bad as my other schools!... Courses are only a little unreasonably difficult... AND they offer above and beyond support for my disabilities! I busted my ass and was miserable this last semester, but I GOT ON THE DEAN'S LIST! Oh yeah #WorthIt #Maybe
- Most importantly, now IS THE FUTURE! I am not the only one with an uncertain dog in this fight. No one knows what technology with change the world next, but one thing is for sure, everything is brand spanking new to the human species. The potential is almost limitless. Forget poverty and disabilities, if we (the human race) continue to solve biological questions with massive data analysis, we (you the readers and I) MIGHT. NOT. HAVE. TO. DIE.
- And if that's not enough, there's always KITTY!
Even a scary kitty is worth hugging!
My Talents
- I have been tutoring math and sciences on and off since 2007 and I love it. There is no better feeling than showing someone who thinks that they are dumb that they really aren't. I do nothing more than guide my students using socratic method (asking questions) until it clicks. What it takes to make it click for them is MY problem to solve. Problem solving is the name of the game, either way you look at it.
- I taught myself Frontend Web Development using various free online resources, the most significant of which was https://www.freecodecamp.org/ I am still stuck on transitioning to the backend of things, but I'm getting there.
Here's my portfolio of projects on CodePen . It's a little messy because I've been moving forward on so many new projects and challenges one after another. I hope to come back to touch up a few things after I've established a few more skills. - My major is Biomedical Engineering. I have passed the following academic coursework in my college career: Inorganic Chemistry, 1st quarter Organic Chemistry, General Biology, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, General Physiology, Ecology, Ultrasound Technician Certification, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Vector Calculus, C++, Ethical Philosophy, Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Programing in MATLAB (the cool stuff, not just doing math homework with it), Biostatistics, 1st Year of Japanese, Kinematic Physics, Thermodynamic Physics, too many college writing course requirements with still more to come.
Current Goals
- Get Money. I really need something live off of if I want to continue on to grad school and start a family. I'm investigating a lot of options, but I don't know of any that give me >50% confidence that I can thrive on them at the moment.
- Get Lab Experience. My dream career, where I think I really should be, is in a neuroscience research lab working the neuroengineering side of things.
- Finish undergrad, get into grad school, pass grad school, and get a research career.
Hope that works for a good introduceyourself post. Steemit seems like a great idea that fits my personal political and economic philosophy. I look forward to expanding into that in a future post. I have a lot of ideas worth sharing . Let me know of any feedback you have for me in the comments.
