This thing was started by conradt@conradt, and came to me vicariously through mariannewest@mariannewest and practicalthought@practicalthought.

The deal is, if you read this then perhaps you can also take up the challenge. It's a great practice, and it helps put our lives into context. It humbles the ego and lets the heart open up.

Today I am grateful for sadness, I'm grateful for grey days and depression. Why would life put these things into play without reason? I'm not about to develop a victim mentality and miss the whole point. It's all contrast. I'm grateful for ignorance, to give the right context for insight and wisdom. If I never dwelled in the dark perhaps I would have never basked in the light, or came to the awareness of it.

I'm grateful for staring out the window at the rain, and the wind buffeting my room and shaking the house. I'm grateful for quiet city streets in the morning.

I'm grateful for the people I can't accept, and the people who piss me off - these are the people that I learn the most from.

I'm grateful for being tested, and for feeling exhausted. And then in hind sight knowing that without strong winds my roots would never have grown so strong. Without floods and droughts I would have never known my limits. Without a poverty of a soul, there could be no absolute abundance. And so we come to know ourselves through all of these opposites, can we really blame one half?

I'm grateful for thirst, and the sweetness of water when it finally comes. Grateful for the bathroom when I have been holding on for too long. Grateful to not get what I want, because in fact I did not deserve it at that time. And if I had gotten everything I wanted, then perhaps I would have stayed a selfish child forever.

Life is wise, and it sends many gifts for us to learn from. Some are sweet and some are bitter. But it's always the right thing at the right time. I don't doubt that. I'm grateful for my conversation with life, and for everything it shows me when I manage to keep quiet.
