Some Christians believe that God implants the grace of sanctification in the hearts of people he likes. S a result of this, growth in the spirit is purely the gift of God, they tend to argue. Such people contend that no matter the efforts one puts into living holy life, we may find out such efforts may be in vain as men’s sanctification is the grace of God.

To such people, Christians should stop struggling to be holy, since those that have the gift may not need struggle to attain their hearts’ desire of holiness. The school of thought if viewed critically seems to destroy human freedom, which
God endows on us by creating man in his image and making him different from other creatures. Indeed, mans growth in sanctification is God’s work, but it’s also man’s. the attainment of the final goal of eternal life depend on man but it is also primarily God’s gift.. Though, sanctification of man is a gift of God, human activity is indispensable for the growth and development of spiritual life and this human activity is as a result of God’s grace

This complementary coexistence of divine and human activities is nowhere better expressed than in the programmatic, paradoxical statement of Paul’s work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For God is at work in you.. (Philippians 2;12;13). Human activity and co-operation of man are absolutely necessary and indispensable for growth and development of Trinitarian life in us, but this human activity is the result of God’s grace.

In order to grow in the Spirit, we need fidelity to Christ, docility to the Holy Spirit, but this docility in itself is a gift of God. One could perhaps say, and rightly too, that man’s activity in the realm of grace is a divine human action issuing both from the spirit that indwells and from man who is indwelt. The Spirit increases that life because of an inactivity that is both the Spirit’s and man’s. In this growth, the increase of spiritual life in man is in proportion to the spirit’s activity in him, if man lets him act freely; and co-operation of man, is equally needed.
