More and more people are getting into Cryptos - but they are afraid! Hackers steal Bitcoins - how can we be safe?
So, many people ask, how to secure their cryptos and how to be safe - here is my roundup to this:

How to be safe with your Bitcoins

Never trust anybody

You might see lot's of services on the Internet, and many helpful people (like me) - but: DO NOT TRUST THEM (trust me instead...!)- but at whatever you do, do never ever expose your private keys to anyone! Private keys are your money! Wallets are just tools to keep private keys!

Stay offline

Many websites offer services like password-generators, password safes, paperwallet printers / generators and much more: do never give your private key out of hand! NEVER!
Do not use wireless printers as well!

use open source tools

Sure, open source tools might be compromised, too, but at least you could take a look at what the tools are doing. Commonly known tools like KeePassX are quite safe to use...

generate passwords offline

Use a tool like KeePassX to generate and safe passwords. BrainPasswords are not as secure as you might think. Use passwords with 64+ Bytes length! Size matters! Do not use online password-generators - your password is for sure in a database and will be used!

don't use online (Paper)-Wallet-Generators

You send your private key to a website? Congrats! You can send the bitcoins to me instead ... Your private key will be cleared - trust me! (but... never trust anyone! Do not trust online Services!)
Your private key is your money - not the wallet! The wallet is just a tool to keep private keys!

store your keys save!

I store my keys in the cloud! UHHH! google drive!!! UUUUHHHUUUHHH!
but not plain text - I am using a cryptomator, which contains many information about my cryptos and many documents - and it contains a password safe file (keePassX) - both secured with different, long passwords. I only open it on my linux system (and hope it is safe enough)
the private keys are only stored - I almost never open this store. The store with the secure passwords is used more frequently...
Storing the Keys on paper is also a good idea - but notice them per hand, or print them locally as picture (not as pdf)

Use 2FA whenever possible

I need 2FA for almost everything right now.

  • Logging into my local linux PC with encrypted HardDisk? 2FA!
  • Marketplaces: 2FA
  • eMail: 2FA
... just use it! Use Authy or even google authenticator. Do not trust SMS 2FA (it is better than nothing, but... do not trust them!)

I hope we all stay safe and do not get hacked... (anyways... not much to steal from me.... if you want to change that, you can:
