Financially, it's hard to compete with big chains and farmers when you compare the vegetable prices... But, on the other side, what you pointed out, knowing what you harvest, and following the growth from the seed to harvest gives a completely different level to it!
Personally, I don't have a garden, and I buy all my food at the supermarket or the local food market... But, when I go to my parents' house and try something from their garden, OMG, all the rest I ate makes no sense! The tomato and cucumber have SMELL and TASTE! They aren't just pure, tasteless water!
So, keep doing your garden... With experience gained during the process, you can do only better!
