When I was in my teenage years, I missed some of the great performers and musicians of those times... Luckily, Phil Collins wasn't one of them, and I fully enjoyed all his music with Genesis and later in his solo career... But, similarly to you, when I got older, I perceived his music differently, more maturely, and paid attention to all those small things inside his songs... Drums, lyrics...
His music was great in the '80s and 90's, but the same music today sounds even better!
