I agree with your sentiment. Russia's leadership has humiliated itself by being a belligerent against its neighbor and brother country and simultaneously being inept. And those Russians who are complicit in it by being passive, turning a blind eye, and supporting the belligerence are also humiliating themselves.

The point of not humiliating Russia, as a whole, is to try to avoid the dangerous situation that Europe created in of Germany following World War One. That humiliation set the stage for Hitler and Nazism to gain control of an intelligent, industrious nation and set fire to Europe. The stakes are even higher now, with nuclear weapons.
