Putin has announced his uncompromising goal to wear down and conquer Ukraine. It's wishful thinking to believe their requests for negotiations are anything but a stalling tactic, to rebuild their weapons stockpiles and army, perhaps even find the time to train them. Presently, peace is not a realistic option. Handing Ukraine to Russia after already committing to support them is technically an option but again it's not one that costs less than continuing the support. Not just in terms of resources, either.

This is a dilemma in which assumptions of a potential negotiated peace working do not work. At this stage, a dominant military advantage, on either side, will bring peace. The cost to everyone becomes enormous if that advantage falls to the Russians, so it is a bargain to the US and the rest of the "West" to continue supporting Ukraine. It is at Ukraine's great expense too, but they seem to generally agree that fighting is a bargain compared to capitulation.
