Many modern English writers commit the sin of writing of heroic deeds in distant times with modern language.

I'm sure a lot of English writers struggle with this writing for different times. There are trade-offs either way. I think the best way is to get creative. I was impressed with the way the sci-fi show Firefly addressed it. They spoke mostly vernacular English but swear words were morphed versions of current ones (goddamn -> gorram) or Chinese language insults. It tied well with the general anachronism of the show, it being a cowboy western set in the far future, far from Earth.
