On a serious note though there are traditional herbalists with a vast knowledge of the local flora, I remember once working in my garden with a zulu chap of about my age, I was suffering from intense heartburn. I happened to mention this to him. He immediately walked around the garden for awhile then pulled out what I took to be weed. On the roots were little brown nodules which he offered to me to eat. Trusting soul that I am, I chewed them, they had a slight minty taste if I recall, and viola the heartburn was gone.
Wish I could remember what plant it was....
