I've chatted with @willymac about memories and that I have had to dig deep into my mind to find pictures of my childhood, parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and places during my life due to having lost all our family photos.
Willy wanted to know how it happened so here goes. After my father died when I was 12 years old, he left my mom some money, surely enough for us to live off along with her pension for quite some time. We bought a little house as we always lived in a work related home provided to my mom through the organisation that employed her.
Well mom suffered from chronic depression and had a few setbacks that landed her in a clinic for treatment twice. I had to fend for myself for these times and coped just fine as my parents had raised us to be sufficient. After mom got back home after her second admission we got some visitors. A causon and her husband, he wanted to borrow some money from mom who knew nothing about finances and didn't have the heart to say no, so off went the money. Then there came an uncle that wanted to borrow some money and again, off went the money.
Not long after these there came an aunt's ex husband who offered to help mom manage her money. Well he helped her very well by managing mom's money into his bank account and soon we sold our house as with inflation, her pension just wasn't covering our costs and the uncle had convinced mom that we were spending more money than we realised. He offered for us to move into a cottage on his property. This didn't last long as he soon told mom that we had no money left even with using her pension to live off and paying no rent so mom then realised that we had been swindled, but still didn't have it in her to have the bastard criminally charged. Needless to say, nobody ever paid mom back any money.
We ended up moving from place to another trying to survive, often being in one place only for a while and living out of boxes. The last place we moved to before I found my first job as a welder, was the place where in the packing and moving the boxes with all our photo albums in stayed behind by accident. I had gotten called up to the army and my mom also took a nursing job again to be able to live so moved into a nurses home. I tried to get in touch with the people we stayed with, but they had also moved away and there were no cell phones yet and facebook unheard of.
People can be cruel no matter who they are and or how close to you and life will throw every curveball imaginable and you'd just better learn to catch and duck. My memories thankfully are sharp when it comes to those years and my family as they made a great impact on me, even at such a young age. My mom and I suffered a great deal together, but also stood together.
The love of a good mother is a powerful thing.
