Awhile back my wife and I were returning home from shopping at nearby Jeffreys Bay. On the way from the town of
Humansdorp to our small farm near St Francis Bay, a distance of about fifteen kilometres, the road passes through farmland. These farms comprise mainly of dairy and cattle farming.
As we drove up out of a river valley onto the long straight to the Kromme River, we suddenly came upon an unusual sight! The traffic had stopped ahead and was making way for a strange herd (don’t know what you call the collective noun for what we saw).
Instead of the usual herd of cattle or cows that we are used to stopping for, coming along the road were what I estimated to be about a hundred ostriches! I quickly took some pictures with my phone as they passed our car. They were so close to our car that I thought one might pop its head through the window and peck us so I quickly closed it!
The farm adjacent to there was an ostrich farm and they were moving stock from one camp to another.
