For this occasion, I don't intend to analyze a Grimm Brothers' fairy tale, but one much closer to home. It belongs to a series of stories that became popular in my country, Venezuela: the tales of Uncle Tiger and Uncle Rabbit. These stories were written by Antonio Arraiz, but over the years, through oral tradition, people popularized them, adding more information, characters, and elements, always with the aim of teaching children a lesson. >Para esta ocasión no pretendo analizar algún cuento de los hermanos Grimm, sino uno mucho más cercano a mi, es uno que pertenece a una saga de cuentos que se popularizó en mi país, Venezuela, me refiero a los cuentos de tío Tigre y Tío Conejo. Estos cuentos fueron escritos por Antonio Arraiz, sin embargo a lo largo de los años y la tradición oral, la gente los popularizó, añadiendo más información, personajes y elementos pero siempre con el objetivo de aleccionar a los niños.

In my own case, I remember my beloved grandmother Hilda, sitting in her rocking chair with some piece of clothing in her hands, skillfully sewing it. All of us grandchildren would gather around her as she narrated the adventures of Uncle Rabbit and the clever way he escaped the tricks of his nemesis, Uncle Tiger. We always ended up in stitches because the story's ending was always witty and funny.

Overview/Resumen

Uncle Tiger was a fierce and strong animal, but very arrogant. He believed that his strength alone was enough to rule the entire place, and the fear of the other animals confirmed it. They treated him with deference, not out of respect, but out of sheer fear, so he always got what he wanted, when he wanted it. However, Uncle Rabbit was the only one who always gave him what he deserved, so Uncle Tiger was always trying to hunt him down to eat him and be done with him once and for all. One day, Uncle Tiger saw Uncle Rabbit sitting on a rock with his legs spread, using a smaller rock to break something he had there. At first, Uncle Tiger thought about pounced on him to devour him because he was very hungry, but as soon as he jumped up and stood in front of Uncle Rabbit, Uncle Rabbit told him to at least let him finish his lunch. "What is that?" Uncle Tiger asked curiously, and Uncle Rabbit replied: “They’re my own corozos (walnuts), Uncle Tiger.” “There’s nothing else to eat around here, so I had no choice but to crush my own corozos, but they’re nutritious and they say it makes us smarter.” Uncle Tiger glanced down and looked at his own “Corozos” 😄 and seeing that they were bigger than Uncle Rabbit’s, he thought he could be smarter and more cunning than him, so he pushed him aside and took the stone from his hand, took the rabbit’s place and proceeded to strike the first blow, but a sharp pain made him squeal, while Uncle Rabbit took the opportunity to flee laughing his head off 😂.

>Tío Tigre era un animal feroz y fuerte pero muy soberbio, creía que con su fuerza bastaba para dominar todo el lugar, y el temor de los otros animales se lo confirmaba, lo trataban con deferencia pero no por respeto sino por varadero temor, así que siempre obtenía lo que quería cuando quería. Sin embargo tío Conejo, era el único que siempre le daba su merecido, así que Tío Tigre todo el tiempo trataba de cazarlo para comérselo y terminar con él de una vez por todas. En una ocasión tío Tigre vio a Tío Conejo sentado sobre una piedra con las patas abiertas, usando una piedra más pequeña para romper algo que tenía allí, al inicio Tío Tigre pensó en abalanzarse sobre él para devorarlo porque tenía mucha hambre, pero en cuanto saltó y se puso frente a tío Conejo, este le dijo que al menos le permitiera terminar su almuerzo. “¿qué es eso?” preguntó Tío Tigre con curiosidad, y Tío Conejo le respondió: “Son mis propios corozos (nueces), Tío Tigre” “por aquí no hay nada más que comer, así que no me quedó más remedio que machacar mis propios corozos, pero son nutritivos y dicen que eso nos hace más inteligentes” Tío Tigre echó un vistazo abajo y se miró sus propios “Corozos” 😄 y al ver que eran más grandes que los de tío Conejo pensó que podría llegar a ser más inteligente que él y más astuto, así que lo apartó de un empujón y le quitó la piedra que tenía en la mano, tomó el lugar del conejo y procedió a dar el primer golpe, pero una punzada de dolor lo hizo chillar, mientras tío conejo aprovechaba para huir muerto de risa 😂. ![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/mairene1/Eq39w7CwhvAWA5qCa38vhAoYq1HGJz5dTa8iYTN8UvhPy5iLZDy93WMkVrRh6GLpJtX.png) [Fuente](https://libreonline.com/mensaje-inspiracional-tio-tigre-y-tio-conejo/)

Because of this, Uncle Tiger was even angrier and decided to take merciless revenge. Believing himself to be far superior to Uncle Rabbit, he set up a guard post in front of the lake, saying, “At some point, you will have to come and drink water, and as soon as you do, I will eat you.” Days passed, and indeed, Uncle Rabbit was very thirsty because he couldn't go to drink water as usual. But one day, he had a clever idea. He went to the bees and asked them for some honey. He smeared it all over his body and rolled around in a pile of dry leaves. Then he went to the lake to drink water.

>Debido a esto Tío Tigre estaba más furioso aún y decidió vengarse sin piedad. Creyendo estar muy por encima de Tío Conejo, se instaló a montar guardia frente al lago diciendo: “En algún punto tendrás que venir a beber agua y en cuanto lo hagas, te comeré”. As soon as Uncle Tiger saw that strange animal emerge from the forest and head towards the lake, he was very curious: What kind of animal was it? Where did it come from? And since he had no information, he decided to ask: “What animal are you?” But the “strange” creature continued drinking water (I remember my grandmother used an onomatopoeia to describe a rabbit drinking: “Lapi, lapi!”). So, getting no answer, Uncle Tiger decided to call it something: “Little leaf of the forest, what do you think you are?” But the animal continued drinking water as if there were no tomorrow, Lapi, Lapi! Uncle Tiger was starting to get impatient and asked: “Little leaf of the forest, how long has it been since you drank water?” Then finally, when he had quenched his thirst, Uncle Rabbit replied: “Since that time I made you eat your own corozo fruit,” and he left laughing his head off 😂, leaving Uncle Tiger furious once again 😡.

>En cuanto Tío Tigre vio a aquel animal tan extraño salir del bosque y dirigirse al lago sintió mucha curiosidad: ¿Qué animal era ese? ¿De dónde venía?. Y como no tenía ninguna información decidió preguntar: “¿Qué animal eres?” pero la “extraña” especie continuaba bebiendo agua (recuerdo que mi abuela usaba una onomatopeya para describir al conejo bebiendo: "¡Lapi, lapi!”) entonces al no obtener respuestas Tío Tigre decidió llamarlo de alguna manera: “Hojarrasquito del monte ¿Qué se supone que eres?” pero el animal continuaba bebiendo agua como si no hubiese un mañana, ¡Lapi, Lapi! My Opinion/Mi Opinión

This story has many useful lessons, one of which is that no matter how small you are, if you have a bright mind, you can go far. Uncle Tiger believed he was powerful based on his strength and size, and he used that power to intimidate the smaller and more vulnerable because, after all, it was in his nature; he was a predator. However, Uncle Rabbit, although small and fragile, used his ingenuity and cunning to survive in a hostile world where terror reigned. He never resigned himself to his fate because he was sure that his decisions and actions could change his destiny. All that was needed was for more animals like him to imitate him to end the power of the infamous Uncle Tiger.

>Este cuento tiene muchísimas enseñanzas útiles, una de ellas es que no importa que tan pequeño seas, si tienes una mente brillante puedes llegar lejos. Later, when I started researching the origin of these stories, I discovered they were written in the first half of the 20th century by Antonio Arraiz. It was a difficult time when landowners held absolute power and, in most cases, sowed terror in the countryside. Peasants had no choice but to obey and bow their heads, surrendering to the injustice and cruelty of their bosses. However, there was always that one peasant who used his cunning to somehow escape injustice. From this idea arose the main characters of these stories: Uncle Tiger represents the power of the landowner, the feudal lord, with all his arrogance, while Uncle Rabbit represents the average peasant, the barefoot man who relies on his own experience in the fields, his skills and cunning to survive another day.

These stories are funny because from the beginning we dream that Uncle Tiger gets what he deserves, so when this happens it fills us with gratification and we laugh at the absurd way in which he was tricked, but at the same time it teaches us another lesson: We should never underestimate anyone, there are no small enemies, we all have the capacity to fight and survive, especially when we feel that we have nothing left to lose.
