That may make a lot more sense to me than it does to you. One day you may find yourself understanding it and it may be a different saying but the sentiment remains.
They say life is stranger than fiction and this may be true. In fiction you have a curve with ups and downs, you have indications of what is good. Your hero, villain and victim are almost always clearly defined.
In life, you don't have that luxury, in life no one knows whether something is truly good. It may seem good then it leads to bad. It may seem bad and lead to good.
In fiction, these are just plot twists that do lead to a conclusion. Many times they are created specifically that way to evoke emotion.
Things blend more in life, you may guess at the conclusion but be reminded that such a conclusion is momentary and fleeting. Accept the good as you do the bad because they are the same.
What you do with either is what makes the difference.
When the bell no longer rings
Evil is afoot
Do you remember when it rang?
Do you believe all to be good?
Not a buzz a cling or a ding,
why won't the bell ring?
When it rang there was light,
a buzz and clinking of delight.
Do you remember when it rang?
With it, life has taken flight.
With the bell, there was light.
Now souls in darkness delight.
