'Two Step Verification' is actually a layer of security, after adding it to the account, you can completely secure your account. It is called 'two step verification' because it requires two steps to login to your account. In the first you have to enter your correct password and in the second you have to enter OTP.
If you do not enter the OTP then you will not be able to access the account. You can use SMS, voice call or mobile app to get OTP. The biggest advantage of 'two step verification' is that no one else will be able to use your Google account without your consent.
To turn on 'two step verification', you will first need to open your Google account. After this, you have to select the Security option in the navigation panel. Then go to Signing in to Google and click on Two Step Verification inside it then click on Get Started. After this, simply follow the on-screen instructions to do 'two step verification'.
