Veto power is the authority given to prevent a proposed decision from taking effect in the country. Yes, this authority is good, and it should be used when necessary, especially for the president of a country; this man has the power to veto a bill from the legislature across the states.
The current president of Cameroon, who is in the person of Paul Biya, has the veto power to stop them from moving without their ID cards, and there have been restrictions on movement in Cameroon for years, which has stayed with them. So this veto power is delegated to all to obey and follow the laws that govern the country.
In Nigeria, there is freedom of movement, freedom of speech, and many more. If the president of Nigeria stood to say, no movement for a month in Nigeria, it would stay, because the power is delegated from the highest.
Yes, but it should be limited and should be for checks and balances in our country to protect the peace of the citizens. The veto power is good, which prevents the harmful or unconstitutional decisions from taking place in our country.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the president declared a lockdown in Nigeria to prevent the spread of this disease to others, and they introduced measures to prevent this disease, such as washing hands, wearing a facemask, and a vaccine that people could take. The president put these measures in place to prevent this disease from passing from one person to another, because a lot of people were affected and killed by the disease.
This was a good decision from our president at that time.
However, I have a serious problem with the use of this veto power. I believe it should be used appropriately when it comes to security and the lives of the citizens. Until now, the Nigerians are still facing the issues of insecurity and insurgency and the president is not delegating their veto power in this area. I believe strongly that by now, these issues would have been dealt with if the government had delegated its veto power appropriately to put a stop to them.
The veto power should be used maximally to stop abduction and insurgency in Nigeria. And those guys should be dealt with. I have never seen a President negotiating a price with the kidnappers. Instead, the power would be delegated to eliminate the offenders. I believe that by doing this, the issues of insecurity and insurgency will suddenly die off in Nigeria. This is a kind of power to be used to prevent citizens from being terrorized and tormented by armed people who are for destruction.
