Greetings everyone!
First, let's get the definition of nepotism. It's an act of granting access, opportunities, jobs, and positions to their family members or friends.
We have seen it happen in our world, favoring close relatives over the qualified ones, which is not appropriate and acceptable in today's standards. And it's against the law or the constitution of Nigeria and other countries. It will not be fair that I am the CEO of a company or an organization and I tend to employ my family members who are not qualified, certified, educated, or exposed to the foundation of the school. Deciding to go this route will either introduce a constructive or destructive team that may either mar or make your company.
Helping relatives is not bad, but when it is done illegally, that's when it's bad or destructive. The needful must be done legally to earn the respect you deserve. You need to be fair to the qualified relatives and outsiders who are not related to you by blood or otherwise.
Yes, it should be criminalised when done illegally and there should be a strong law that kicks against it. Nepotism should be neutral and not one-sided involving fairness and the interest of the people.
Helping a family member is not wrong, as the CEO, Manager, or any position you think you are operating in, giving jobs, a contract, or opportunities is generally acceptable when it is well managed or coordinated in a proper standard through qualifications, and not the other way round.
Yes, every advantage should be used to help others, it should be done in wisdom. Leadership is a call to responsibility, so you must exercise your leadership skills with integrity, faithfulness, and impartiality. This makes you a leader without compromising.
It becomes too far, when a relationship is used as a means of employing people instead of looking at the qualifications or qualified people who are due or suitable for the position.
However, nepotism is good and accepted in the right disposition. And when fairness is required, things will move smoothly.
Nepotism in an unfavorable environment is called corruption, unfairness, and misuse of power. Your power should be regulated and positioned to do the right thing.
