If someone commits a serious offense, it is not right for the online community to decide the punishment to give them. The online community will say a whole lot, but that doesn't mean they have the authority to discipline the offenders. It is left for the authority. The court and other panel institutions have the legal right to determine the consequences the offenders are going to face.
In Nigeria, the Court has the legality of dealing with these issues, and it will be brought online, where the online community will have to air their point, it might be valid, but it doesn't give approval to the offenders.
So in this case, the court would choose to punish or not to punish the offenders.
Like a story of a man who committed a serious crime, he beheaded the head of his girlfriend, and along the way to his ritual place, he was caught in the bush carrying the head of a woman inside a nylon. This case was brought online, which I was one of the viewers, and I thought within me that this man who committed this crime deserves to die too.
This was my thought as a person, and others online also air their opinions about this case that this man deserves to be killed. The family of the girl who said they want the man's death came out publicly. Many people were for the man to die, too.
Now the case was in the court, and they were handling the issue, and they were the ones determining what consequences this man should face. The court investigated the case to find out the truth. The man who committed this offense was lying; what he said did not align at all. As time goes on, the case disappeared from online, and we couldn't hear anything about the man's case again. The court stopped coming online and I don't even know if the man is dead or not. At this point, the court has the authority to free this man, and they have the authority to sentence him to death.
Now, the online opinions were not considered because they were in the hands of the court.
In my point of view, I think the cancel culture from the online community should still be intact, it's like giving room to the people to express their thoughts concerning this case, but the main institution, like the court, should handle the case in a professional way.
