This is where Portugal was born!
In the eleventh century King Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile handed over the government of the Portucalense Province to Count Henry, who came here to live. This one is married with D. Teresa (illegitimate daughter of D. Afonso IV). From this union was born, in 1111, the one who would become the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques.
In 1114, the Count Henry died, having, a few years before, granted a charter to the villa Vimaranes granting special privileges to its inhabitants.
In 1128, on the twenty-fourth of June, there is the Battle of S. Mamede. Campo de S. Mamede, next to the Castle of Guimarães, is named by several historians as having been one of its boxes. This battle is fought between the hosts of D. Afonso Henriques and those of his mother, D. Teresa and the Conde de Trava de Galicia, in which the first defended the independence of the county against the kingdom of Leon. This battle is won by D Afonso Henriques thus marking the foundations of the Portuguese nation.
In 1179, D. Afonso Henriques was recognized King of Portugal by Pope Alexander III.
