I purchased my new phone on the 3rd of March, and I had been anxiously waiting for it to arrive ever since.
My current phone, which I’ve had since 2019, has clearly been reaching the end of its life. The camera app often stops working, and sometimes the entire phone freezes without warning. Lately, I’ve been constantly worried about which would happen first, my new phone arriving or my old one finally giving up completely.
Finally, today, the new phone arrived, but not in the condition I had hoped for. The parcel was in terrible shape. It looked as if it had been run over by a truck. My first instinct was to document everything. I quickly recorded a video of the damaged package, the one I actually uploaded to TikTok, because I felt so disappointed and upset about what had happened to something I had been waiting for so anxiously.
Then I opened the package.
Inside, the phone was in a shocking condition, but in a very specific way. The back glass was completely shattered, and the damage was heavily concentrated around the camera area. The camera module was partially exposed, with internal components visible, as if all the impact had been directed to that one spot.
What made it even more surreal was the contrast. The frame of the phone was in perfect condition, and the screen did not have a single crack. It was completely intact, as if it had been protected from the damage entirely. It looked as though all the force had been absorbed by the back of the phone, specifically the camera, while the rest of the device remained untouched.
At first glance, the damage made the phone seem unusable. It looked broken beyond repair.
Overwhelmed and frustrated, I put the phone aside and immediately started contacting the seller. I explained the situation and sent photos of the damage, not knowing what to expect, especially since the phone had been shipped from Italy to Spain.
To my surprise, they responded very quickly. Even more unexpectedly, they told me they would issue a full refund, and that I could keep the phone.
I was genuinely amazed by their response. In an instant, what had felt like a complete disaster started to shift into something else entirely.
Only after that did I decide to pick the phone back up and try turning it on, mostly out of curiosity. I was not expecting anything.
But it powered up immediately, smoothly, without any issues.
Then came the most unbelievable part, the camera still worked.
Despite the shattered glass and exposed components, the phone functioned normally. Everything worked as if nothing had happened. It did not match what I was seeing at all.
It honestly felt like a miracle. A device that looked so heavily damaged on the outside was still fully operational on the inside. There are almost certainly internal fractures, damage that cannot be seen, but somehow it continues to work.
After the initial shock settled, I realized that the situation had completely changed. What I had thought was a total loss had turned into an opportunity. I now had a damaged phone with valuable spare parts that I could potentially sell.
I have decided not to repair it, but instead sell it for parts, aiming to get around €200. In the meantime, I have already ordered another phone. This one will cost €100 more than the previous one, since the first had been a rare bargain. However, that bargain has now effectively turned into €200 that I can put toward the new purchase.
Interestingly, something unexpected happened along the way. The TikTok video I uploaded, the one of the damaged package, started gaining attention. What began as me simply sharing my frustration turned into a viral moment.
Within a short time, the video reached over 130,000 views. I gained hundreds of new followers, and many people shared their thoughts and reactions.
What makes it even more surprising is that I did not try to make the video go viral at all. I did not use hashtags or put any effort into optimizing it. I simply recorded my honest reaction and shared my frustration in the moment, without thinking about attention or reach.
And yet, that raw honesty is what connected with people.
For the first time in a while, it feels like something positive might come out of all this.
Maybe this is the silver lining I could not see before, and honestly, I really needed one.
