We’ve all been there: you have a piece of vintage jewelry that you want to love, but it just isn't working. For me, it was a very 2000s-style glass bead necklace hiding in the back of my "to be sold" pile. It never even made it to my shop listings because, frankly, it had issues.

The original maker had completely butchered the lock mechanism, and the style was just… way too busy. It felt dated and a bit weird.

Instead of letting it gather dust, I decided to take it apart and completely recreate it using bits and pieces I had laying around.

What followed was a chaotic journey of flying beads, heavy furniture lifting, and a tiny bit of improvisation. Here is how I saved it.

The Great Carpet Scramble

My first attempt at reassembling the necklace didn't go quite as planned. I didn't actually measure the number of beads from the original piece before diving in, and halfway through, it ended up being way too short.

But then, disaster struck.

While I was trying to measure the progress, the strand slipped out of my hands. In slow motion, it fell right onto the dining room floor. Cue the sound of dozens of glass beads scattering into the matrix of my rug.

There I was, on my hands and knees, picking up everything I could find from the fibers. When I started restringing them, I realized a ton were still missing so, it wouldn't fit anyone.

Determined not to give up, I literally had to drag my heavy carpet out from under the dining table to hunt them down.

I managed to rescue almost everything. Except for three.

Three tiny beads vanished into the void.

Turning a Mistake into a Masterpiece

Exhausted but stubborn, I refused to let three missing beads ruin the project. I decided to improvise by borrowing a few beads from other sections of the necklace to balance out the pattern. If someone were to sit down and meticulously count them, they’d notice the shortage, but visually? It mimics the exact spacing perfectly.

The catch? The final piece is dainty. Exactly 37.5
centimeters or 14.76 inches.

It is officially a true choker length. It’s going to need a slender-necked girlie. Someone rocking a size XS or Small to style this one, but it is absolutely stunning.

Pictures Don't Do It Justice!

If there is one frustration left, it’s that the photos just don't capture the true magic of this piece. These glass beads absolutely shimmer in the sunlight, reflecting a stunning, luxurious glow that the camera lens completely flattens.

Despite the carpet drama, I am so incredibly happy with how this turned out. It is more contemporary, more stylish, and carries a classic, quiet luxury vibe.

Second necklace, officially saved!

P.S. I have some extra exciting news to share! The very first necklace I redesigned recently just sold for €10! Honestly, it’s not even about the money, it’s the pure joy of knowing someone out there loves a piece I created with my own two hands.

Making something out of total happiness and getting paid for it? There's really nothing better.
